Tallinn City Council receives 30,000 Savisaar support signatures; turns to court over mayor suspension (2)
Center Party secretary general Priit Toobal and Urmo Saareoja, the head of the party's youth wing, handed Tallinn City Council chairman Kalev Kallo 30,000 signatures on Thursday, supporting suspended mayor Edgar Savisaar, bringing the number of people to support Savisaar to 47,700.
The party handed over 17,000 signatures two weeks ago. The Center Party has a majority in Tallinn's council.
“The huge number of signatures shows that the people of Tallinn care about what is happening to the mayor,” Toobal said, adding that this should motivate the council to turn to the Supreme Court on the question of Savisaar's suspension.
The city council decided on Thursday evening to turn to the Supreme Court to open a constitutional review into a legal paragraph used by authorities to suspend Savisaar.
Savisaar is a suspect in four episodes of corruption also involving the city government and the party. He was suspended from his duties as the mayor of Tallinn on September 30. State prosecutor Laura Vaigu said Savisaar may use his position to influence witnesses, if he continued in office.
