Foreign Minister Meets With UN Secretary General
Foreign Minister Urmas Paet met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York yesterday.
Paet introduced Estonia’s plans to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council this year and part of the UN Security Council in 2020, a press release from the Foreign Ministry said.
They also discussed Estonia’s contribution as president of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court. “We feel it is essential to achieve the global jurisdiction of the court by getting as many countries as possible to join the ICC,” Paet said.
The conversation also covered the EU's economic crisis, the situation in Syria, and the UN sustainable development conference that took place in June in Rio de Janeiro.
Paet extended an invitation to Ban to visit Estonia in the near future.
The minister also met today with UN Undersecretary Jeffrey D. Feltman.
