Estonia Starts Stint on UNESCO Executive Council
Estonia is taking part for the first time in the UNESCO executive committee, which convened for the 194th time this week in Paris.
Estonia's permanent representative at UNESCO, Ambassador Marten Kokk, addressed the executive committee, talking about development goals and and the importance of Internet freedom.
UNESCO has an important role in developing the UN's long-term development goals for education.
Kokk said that "keeping the Internet the same way as it has been" and protecting journalists worldwide were priorities for Estonia.
He also said he was pleased with the cooperation between UNESCO and the Freedom Online Coalition, which Estonia currently holds the presidency.
On April 28-29, the coalition will hold a conference in Tallinn.
Estonia was selected as an executive committee member for 2014-15. The committee will meet at least four times over the next two years. For the last five years, Estonia was on the UNESCO world heritage committee.
