Rüütel Awarded Peace Prize
Former Estonian president Arnold Rüütel is today receiving the Gusi Peace Prize in the Philippines.
Rüütel is one of 17 laureates from around the world to be recognized this year, reported ETV. The award is given out by a Manila-based foundation inspired by the human rights efforts of Capt. Gemeniano Javier Gusi, a World War II guerrilla and later a politician.
"A defender of Estonia’s sovereignty in the former USSR, he played an important role in uniting his people and political forces in their struggle for independence," the foundation's website says of Rüütel.
The former president is also being recognized for his research work and environmental protection initiatives.
The awards ceremony will be attended by 8,000 guests.
