Kallas's Government to Take Power Before April, Says Academic
Siim Kallas's new government should be in office before April, coalition partnership with IRL is expected to continue, but a few ministerial changes will happen, predicts Tallinn University political scientist Tõnis Saarts.
Saarts told uudised.err.ee on Sunday that there is a slight chance the Reform Party will exchange IRL for the Social Democrats, but they will have to justify the move, and the reason behind the change could be a number of IRL politicians, who have suffered setbacks.
“Even though Ansip has been successful, people are becoming quite tired of him and his governments. There’s been a vague feeling of frustration in Estonia the last couple of years, that things aren’t changing for the better. It’s sort of a shakeup to appease this feeling that there needs to be a change,” Andres Kasekamp, the director of the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute, told Bloomberg on Sunday.
MEP Kristiin Ojuland, who was ejected from the Reform Party last year on accusations of rigging internal leadership elections, said that the Ansip and Kallas switch is autocratic.
Speaking to Virumaa Teataja today, Ojuland said that Kallas did not participate at the previous parliamentary elections, and it is not democratic for a few people to decide such important matters on their own, citing the Reform Party's recent announcement that Kallas has the party leadership's approval to form the next government.
