Paet: Estonia Condemns Violence in Syria
Estonia condemns the violence and repressions committed by the Syrian regime, Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet said at a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Brussels today.
In order to end the violation of human rights, Syria should follow the plan outlined by the Arab League, said Paet, adding that the EU must continue to support the Arab League which has played a key role in seeking solutions for solving the conflict.
Syrian authorities must allow humanitarian aid to reach distressed civilians without any hindrance, Paet said.
Considering the seriousness of the situation, Estonia supports further economic restrictions against Syrian government by the EU, said Paet. "We support creating contacts with all parties of the Syrian opposition that abstain from violence, adhere to democratic values, and respect human rights," he said.
During the meeting, the foreign ministers also discussed the latest developments in Egypt. "In relations with Egypt, the EU will have to monitor the activities of the Egyptian authorities for furthering democracy in the society, with special attention to human rights issues, including the rights of women and children," Paet said.
Estonia also supports the EU initiative of starting negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement with Egypt, said Paet.
