Center-Reform coalition would be worst option, says SDE heavyweight
Social Democrat (SDE) Parliament faction head Andres Anvelt said an SDE-less government would not include social democratic paragraphs in the coalition agreement. Despite voting to resign from the government, Anvelt said a Reform Party-Center Party alternative would be the worst case scenario for the nation.
“The political opportunities in the Parliament allow for other coalitions, which is definitely one argument which made us understand about great risks ahead, such as the most dangerous coalition for Estonia – the Center Party and the Reform Party,” Anvelt said.
He said he would have been happy for his party to resign from the government as they could have pushed more of their own agenda into the coalition agreement.
Anvelt said the party is not split between those who wanted to leave and those who didn't and the party will now have to move forward in accordance with the vote on Sunday, when the party's council decided by 35 votes to 25 to carry on with the Reform Party and IRL.
“There is discontent that we can achieve a lot more, maybe find new coalition opportunities, but if that fails then in opposition we can not fill any of our aims,” he said.
