New Supreme Court Chair Chosen Unanimously
Parliament today voted Priit Pikamäe as the next chief justice of the Supreme Court, to begin his termafter Märt Rask finishes his on September 12.
Pikamäe received an unanimous vote from 89 MPs and two MPs remained neutral, according to ERR radio. In extolling Pikamäe's accomplishments, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said Pikamäe has a very strong academic background and is a lawyer with extensive experience as a court judge.
The President also mentioned Pikamäe has done much for the advancement of the Estonian court system and criminal law. Pikamäe is the head of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court.
The Courts Act stipulates nine years as Pikamäe's term of office.
