Anvar Samost, who was in effect sacked as the editorial head of Postimees, has joined coalition party IRL and will run for the European Parliament in a few months.

“Looking at Estonia's party political landscape, IRL has tried to do the most for Estonia in the 1990s and now,” Samost said at a press conference today.

He said if he is not elected to the European Parliament, he will continue in politics.

Samost opened a online petition at the beginning of February calling for PM Andrus Ansip to drop plans of visiting the Sochi Olympic games. The petition collected nearly 1,000 votes, including a number of other IRL politicians.

Samost worked for the Baltic News Service (BNS) from 1995 until 2011, leading the company for last five years. He worked for Postimees from 2011-13, and stepped down last fall.
