Savisaar support drive up to 13,000 signatures (1)
A campaign by the Center Party and its youth wing to drum up support for party head Edgar Savisaar, suspended as Tallinn mayor pending a bribery investigation, has so far collected 13,000 signatures.
The first set of signatures will be presented to the Tallinn City Council, where the party has a clear majority, with the petition participants asking the council to ask the Supreme Court whether Savisaar's suspension was constitutional.
The drive will continue until October 28, after which the remaining signatures will be presented to the council as well.
Harju County Court suspended Savisaar at the end of September, after he was named suspect in a bribery case.
Savisaar, in politics since the 1980s, is more often than not the biggest vote magnet. He won over 25,000 votes at the last general election, over 9,000 more than Taavi Rõivas, the prime minister.
