Taro quits ERR for IRL, will run for Parliament
Journalist Igor Taro, who has spent long stretches covering the Ukraine conflict, said he will quit ERR and run for Parliament under IRL, adding that he now wants to offer answers instead of highlighting problems.
"The short answer is that I want to bring southeast Estonia's problems to Toompea. I have been active as a journalist here for a while and I have a good overview of local problems, and I now felt it is time to begin offering answers instead of just posing questions,“ he said.
He said the Ukraine conflict has shown what can happen if border areas decay.
Security is a top issue, Taro said, adding that there are more dimensions than the military side, such as local life. "If local men go to Tallinn or Finland to work then who will protect the area when the need arises?"
Taro is not the only journalist to go into politics ahead of the March 1 national elections. IRL seems to be the destination of choice for journalists, including Anvar Samost (former Postimees chief) and Maire Aunaste (former ETV presenter).
