Estonian Olympic Committee (EOC) president and former Port of Tallinn supervisory board head Neinar Seli said he will resign from his Olympic Committee position following a guilty verdict against him in a conflict of interest case.

The Supreme Court, the highest level of court, ruled on Friday that Seli voted to hand Port of Tallinn funds to the Olympic Committee. As he was the head of both organizations, authorities began an investigation and the courts ruled he breached corruption laws.

Seli told ETV on Friday evening that he will step down from the committee and hand over all responsibilities regarding the 2016 summer games.

“I will not hold on to any social position and I believe discussions will take place in the next few days on how to go on and what are the EOC leadership's next steps,” he said.

He said he does not have a problem with the court decision, adding that a procedural mistake was made at the Port of Tallinn supervisory board meeting where the donation of 250,000 euros to the EOC was decided. He said there is no official record of the meeting's minutes and he did not vote for or against the donation, adding that he was in the room during the meeting.

Seli added that not one cent moved from the Port of Tallinn accounts to the EOC and no damage was done. He said only the image of Estonian sports was damaged. Seli blames Juhan Parts, economy minister at the time, who Seli said cried foul over the donation only in a bid to get rid of him.
