Defense Ministry top official proposed as next foreign intelligence chief
The Ministry of Defense has proposed its Permanent Secretary Mikk Marran as the next head of the Information Board, the foreign intelligence agency.
Current chief Rainer Saks will become the secretary general at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from December 1.
The government must approve Marran's nomination, which it is highly likely to do. Marran has already received green light from the Security Authorities Surveillance Select Committee.
“Marran has done much for the defense of Estonia and has made Estonia larger on the international arena than the population and macroeconomic figures would allow,” Defense Minister Hannes Hanso said.
Marran told Eesti Päevaleht that the exchange of information "must be in the DNA of the Information Board", adding that Estonia has the highest quality of information in the region, and this information can be used to alter the decision-making process of other nations.
Marran has held his post at the ministry since 2011, beginning his career at the ministry in 1999. He has a masters degree from the National Defense University in the United States.
