Priit Pikamäe took the reigns at the Supreme Court on Wednesday, replacing Märt Rask, who had held the post for nine years.

Pikamäe told ETV on Wednesday that the nation's legal system does not need an extensive overhaul, and any change must be evolutionary.

Rask said the greatest achievement of the last nine years is that the legal system is still effective and independent. He added that his most sophisticated case was the European Stability Mechanism ruling, which Estonia ratified a year ago.

In May, Parliament appointed Pikamäe, who has worked on all three levels of the Estonian court system. His term will also last nine years.

According to ETV, Rask, a former interior and justice minister, plans to retire from public life.
