Next Weeks Crucial in Ukraine, Says Academic
The events in Ukraine have intensified, and the next few weeks will show if the number of refugees heading to Russia grows to the point where President Vladimir Putin will launch an intervention, said University of Tartu professor Eiki Berg.
Berg told ERR today a scenario cannot be ruled out whereby the number of civilian deaths escalates and Russia uses it as a reason to officially intervene.
He said it is currently very difficult to tell how high the number of deaths or refugees has to be for Putin to launch an attack, saying his popularity in Russia could plummet if he does not intervene.
The next few weeks will show if Ukraine manages to gain control of the eastern areas or whether the conflict will draw out.
