ERR in Kyiv: Parliament Ready to Press Ahead With Reforms
ERR journalist Astrid Kannel, currently in Kyiv, said the Ukrainian Parliament now has no obstacles to push through reform, but allies must still press the nation to follow through on changes.
Opinions are already being voiced that a few reforms should be taken off the agenda, Kannel said, as it is easy for politicians to say the nation is at war and reforms can wait.
“Corruption is as powerful an enemy as the separatists and if it again won't be broken then Ukraine will once again drift away from Europe. And alone it will be easy pray for Russia,” she said.
Kannel said now is the right time to push Ukraine for changes.
Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk's People's Front won the elections, with around 22 percent of the votes, closely followed by the faction of President Petro Poroshenko. The Opposition Bloc, a anti-Maidan party, collected around 10 percent while the Communist Party failed to pass the threshold for the first time, winning 3.9 percent of the votes.
