Estonia has opened its first honorary consulate in Latvia, with the new honorary consul, Aivar Kesküla, calling for closer bilateral economic, educational and cultural ties.

Kesküla, who heads a locomotive repair factory, resides in the town of Daugavpils, which has a population of 94,000 and sits near the borders of Lithuania and Belarus, reported ETV.

The new consulate was welcomed with a reception held by the Daugavpils mayor, attended by local officials as well as the consuls of Belarus and Russia.

Estonian Ambassador to Latvia Mati Vaarmann called Daugavpils a strategic city, saying Estonia is a pioneer for looking beyond the capital.

Estonia currently has over 170 honorary consuls in 76 countries.
