New Transport Development Plan Seeks to Double Train Passenger Numbers
A new transport development plan submitted to Parliament today by the Economic Affairs Ministry foresees doubling rail passenger numbers by 2020, taking the annual figure to 8.8 million.
Elron spokesman Norbert Kaareste told uudised.err.ee today that the company could in fact double the current 4.4 million figure by as early as 2018.
He said though that the recent introduction of new Stadler trains will not be enough to reach the 8.8 million goal, and that tracks would have to be upgraded to allow faster and safer travel.
Decaying railway station infrastructure, including adjacent bus stops, is also a concern, Kaareste said, but the Ministry of Economic Affairs recently said 15 million euros will be available to upgrade railway stations to improve connections with other types of public transport.
