Starting from January next year, Estonia’s embassy in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana will be the contact point embassy for NATO with a mandate of two years.

Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries are important partners for the alliance, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said in a press release on Sunday.

“In light of the changed security situation and the end of the mission in Afghanistan, we need to develop our relations with the Central Asian states and this is where Estonia could help bridge the relations of NATO and Kazakhstan,” Paet said.

The main task of a contact point embassy is to introduce NATO’s aims and activities and creating and bolstering contacts in the country.
