Regional Railway Council Founded
State railways of Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Belarus and Finland have set up a Baltic Council of Railways to improve cooperation and develop rail transport corridors in the region.
The CEO of Estonian Railways, Ahti Asmann, said in a press release on Wednesday that the new organization will help make more informed administrative decisions in the region.
The council's tasks for the current year include an analysis of international rail lines used to transport goods in the region and to submit ideas to optimize border check-point capacities.
The council was formally founded in St. Petersburg on February 6.
Lithuania did not formally join the organization, but will be a observing member.
