Savisaar Seeks Criminal Investigation of Leak of 'Untrue' State Secret
Tallinn Mayor and Centre Party leader Edgar Savisaar is focusing on the source of the leak that resulted in an article in a daily painting him an agent of influence.
Savisaar said that the information published in Postimees on December 16 was a state secret - albeit one he says is untrue - and is seeking a criminal investigation into the leaking of the secret.
"I request that the public prosecutor analyze this matter thoroughly and make a considered decision to start a criminal case in connection with leaking of a state secret," said Savisaar.
"It is an elementary national security measure that a state secret be safeguarded," said Savisaar, adding that the parties who were privy to the information included the President, Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior and the Security Police (KAPO).
Savisaar said it was "obvious" that one of these forwarded the information to the Postimees.
Savisaar noted that the prosecutor should not see the journalist, Tuuli Koch, as the problem, as she was "only doing her job." "The problem is with those senior government officials who leak secret information, evidently knowing that the information was not true," said Savisaar.
Public prosecutor spokesperson Kadri Tammai confirmed receiving the crime report and said that it would be reviewed within 10 days.
