Sudanese Illegal Dies After Swimming to Estonia (5)
A man thought to be of Sudanese origin died of hypothermia on Wednesday after an apparent attempt to enter Estonia illegally by swimming across the Piusa River.
In a press release, the Police and Border Guard Board said its officers apprehended three people it believes to be of Sudanese origin in Võru County near the Russian border.
Border guards initially found two of the men, one shirtless and wearing only shorts and the other also dressed lightly, who told them that they had swam across the river to enter Estonia, then ditched their wet clothes.
The third man was found after a half-hour search nearby, suffering from hypothermia. Officials and paramedics tried for an hour to resuscitate the man, but were unsuccessful.
The other two men received first aid and their lives are not in danger.
The temperature in the area is currently minus 12 C.
