Former prime minister and European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas told Finnish business daily Kauppalehti that he plans to get out of politics.

"I think my time in politics is over," said Kallas, 65.

Kallas, the founder of the Reform Party back in the 1990s, had been the first choice to be prime minister after long-serving premier Andrus Ansip stepped down in late winter.

He has also been tipped as the next head of state - something that has not yet been ruled out, as the Estonian president is elected by Parliament.

Kauppalehti said Kallas's plans include an academic career, as Estonia's first European commissioner could have ample experiences to write and discuss to students.
