The National Audit Office’s annual report has been generating discussion in the last few days, calling attention to problems in Estonia’s pension system, rural poverty, the aging and emigrating workforce, use of EU financing, and the division of responsibilities between state and local government.

Addressing Parliament yesterday, Auditor General Alar Karis concluded his speech saying: "The problems Estonia faces are one and the same, regardless of national allegiance, race, spiritual convictions and political membership of the people who live here. And these problems require a solution regardless of the future composition of the government and Parliament. To conclude, it is no longer possible for Estonia to continue to delay making choices and decisions.”

Speaking on ETV this morning, Karis said: "We should look at these issues in a complex manner - which today’s problems have been, after all, as each ministry tries to further its own interests. But the holistic picture of the state and the bigger picture concerning how we would like to see our country in five, 10, 20 years, has not been put together. Whether due to a lack of time or a lack of will - it is hard for me to say. Today is the last chance to do this and to solve these matters in a complex manner.”
