Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas did not rule out closing several Estonian embassies abroad as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must make 55 people redundant.

Rõivas said optimization is an alternative, adding that 42 Estonian representations abroad have an economic diplomat.

He said honorary consuls are increasingly used to boost Estonian economic and business activities. Estonia has 195 honorary consuls in 84 countries.

Altogether, Estonia has a presence in 85 countries, but visa applications are only accepted in 23 representations in 20 countries.

The cuts are part of a general decrease in the state apparatus, with the Cabinet agreeing to decrease central government staff numbers by around 1 percent per year.
