Edgar Savisaar, who was named suspect in a criminal investigation on Tuesday, said he will not resign as Mayor of Tallinn or Center Party chairman. Prosecutor has asked court to suspend him from office.

Savisaar gave a press conference this morning.

"I have just started this fight," he told journalists.

He named his return to politics, the Port of Tallinn scandal, and the approaching Center Party congress, due in November, as reasons for the attack on his person.

"Don't worry, everything is OK really," he reassured his supporters, adding: "I'm as clean as a whistle."

In Savisaar's opinion, the Internal Security Service (ISS) is just a pawn and the real question is who ordered the investigation, which according to him could be IRL.

Prosecutor Laura Vaik, meanwhile, announced that she asked court to have Savisaar and Tallinn City Council chairman Kalev Kallo, also a suspect in the case, removed from office for the duration of the investigation.

Criminal Procedures Code permits people to be suspended if keeping the position allows them to commit new crimes or undermine the investigation.

Because Prosecutor's Office handed Savisaar's lawyers a wrong document, Harju County Court rejected prosecution's first request and postponed the hearing until Thursday. The judge will make a ruling on Kallo on Friday.

Savisaar is being suspected of taking bribes. Six more people are under investigation for giving or arranging bribes.
