Savisaar: We Need People's Will to Defend Country
Center Party Chairman Edgar Savisaar said the upcoming elections will focus on defense, but not on weapons but people, and the most important thing is to push through a progressive tax system.
“We are being told that Estonia would be better defended by a few more cannons and tanks, and so on. No war has been won and no land defended only by weapons. This has been done by people, their capabilities and will," Savisaar said at a Center Party congress in Võru on Saturday.
He said what is needed is a will to defend, and for that something worth defending. “What has a person to defend if their income is 300 euros?” he said, adding that Estonia needs to arrive at a point where everyone has something to fight for.
Savisaar said Estonia is finally coming around on the progressive tax scheme, with three parties in Parliament out of four backing it - with ruling Reform in opposition - and it just needs to be voted in. “The decision will strengthen Estonia internally more than any outside alliance or border obstacle course.”
