Police Leadership Change Causes Bad Blood
Tarmo Miilits, who in effect has been sacked from the position of deputy director general of the police force by new chief Elmar Vaher, said he resents the move.
Miilits, who is one of the three deputy director generals to be told to leave (out of a total of five), told Postimees on Wednesday that the new chief said he is no longer part of the team.
Tõnu Hunt, who led the border guard unit of the Police and Border Guard Board and Raigo Haabu, head of the criminal investigations police, are the other two.
Vaher was appointed the new director general in mid-April, following a drawn-out search for a new chief.
Miilits and Hunt both put their name forward for the position in the first round of the search, but a commission tasked with the job said they were looking for someone with “a slightly different profile.”
Critics called the competition a public show saying that the Hunt and Miilits were humiliated.
Miilits said he is now on the job market, Haabu has been offered another position in law enforcement, while Hunt is the new counselor of internal security at Estonia's embassy in Moscow.
