Ansip Confirms EC Commissioner Ambition
Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said on Tuesday evening that he is ready to become the nation's next European Union commissioner.
“Yes, I am interested in becoming a member of the European Commission. But the new commissioner may not come from Estonia, if Siim Kallas is named as the new Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia,” Ansip told ETV.
He said, according to EU legislation, a new commissioner might not be named such a short time before the European Parliament elections.
Ansip will become an MP, after resigning from the government.
An initial agreement between Ansip's Reform Party and its coalition partner, IRL, had named IRL's Mart Laar as Kallas's heir, but Laar is unlikely to accept the position due to health reasons and other commitments.
IRL has said the next commissioner should still come from their own ranks, citing a policy of rotation.
