Savisaar: The people want a Center Party president (4)
Suspended mayor of Tallinn and Center Party leader Edgar Savisaar said on Saturday that the Estonian people expected the next president to be a member of the Center Party.
“The constant flow of good news about the development of Tallinn are giving voters a feeling of confidence that the policies of the Center Party work. With a view to the upcoming presidential election we can also say that the people are expecting the next head of state to come from the Center Party,” Savisaar said.
He went on to say that only a presidential candidate from the Center Party could bring the economy out of the standstill and overcome the country’s fear of Russia.
The Center Party is the biggest opposition party of the country. A recent poll by Turu-Uuringute AS showed Center’s approval rating at 26%, far ahead of the governing Reform Party, which only reached 17%.
But while in the Riigikogu their influence is limited, Center has ruled the capital of Tallinn for years and made its political program for the city as well as its outcomes the party’s national platform.
