Edward Lucas Presents Estonian Version of 'Deception'
In Tallinn yesterday, The Economist's journalist Edward Lucas presented the Estonian translation of his latest book, "Deception: Spies, Lies and How Russia Dupes the West."
The book takes a historical look at Western and Russian intelligence services and the conflicts between them, ETV reported.
It includes a separate chapter on Herman Simm, an Estonian official with access to NATO secrets who was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison in 2009 for spying for Russia. Lucas conducted several interviews with Simm in Tartu Prison.
Lucas has covered Eastern Europe since 1986, having worked in Berlin, Moscow, Prague, Vienna and the Baltics.
His book "The New Cold War" has been translated into 15 languages.
"I think it would be nice to be a country that had no need of spies and where spies never came, but unfortunately Estonia is in a neighborhood where the interests of big outside powers overlap, not always to Estonia's benefit. And so it is an espionage hotspot in some ways," Lucas said.
