Germany is ready to support the Baltic air policing mission in light of the events in Crimea, a news report said on Saturday.

Citing sources in the German Ministry of Defense, Spiegel magazine reported that the country is ready to send six aircraft to police Baltic airspace.

Germany is also ready to enhance the marine defenses of the Baltic states and will send a warship to the region if necessary.

Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told Spiegel that NATO needs to keep a cool head in an unusual situation and should not be drawn into escalating military action.

Steinmeier added that Germany will stand by its partners regardless of the situation, not just in “fair weather”.
