Andrus Ansip, former prime minster of Estonia, has been elected a vice president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament. He himself hopes this position to be temporary, as he has set his eyes on the European Commission.

Currently two Estonians have the privilege of a high-ranking position in the European Parliament. Marju Lauristin was elected vice-president for the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats on May 25.

Ansip has said that the vice president position came as a pleasant surprise, although he has also expressed a desire not to be tied to it for long. In November, the new European Commisison president, Jean-Claude Juncker, will take up his position. Ansip is hoping for a position in the Commission under the new president.
