The North Atlantic Council, the decision-making body of NATO, is likely to approve a package of deterrent measures in member states neighboring Russia on Wednesday, while Estonia is hoping for rotating NATO forces based in Estonia.

Defense Minister Sven Mikser and NATO’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen discussed the package that aims to increase security, ETV reported on Monday.

The package involves ground, air and marine capabilities, which should increase the security of Baltic states through visible deterrence.

“The changed security situation demands resolute action from NATO and a greater presence in its border regions," Mikser said, adding "hopefully the package will include air defense elements on the ground."

“We are certainly interested in a rotating presence of NATO ground troops,” the minister said.

He stressed that in addition ot short-term measures, NATO must also carefully consider its long-term activities, which should be agreed on by NATO’s summit in the fall.
