Estonia's embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan, will also serve as NATO's embassy in the nation. MEP and former Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that this will allow Estonia to increase communication between the NATO and Central Asian states.

“Taken last summer, the decision to hand the Estonian embassy in Kazakhstan the role of being the contact embassy for NATO is a nod to Estonia's activity in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in developing relations between the Central Asia region and the organization,” Paet said in a press release today.

He said the region's role in improving the security environment is growing fast, especially in the light of the end to the NATO mission in Afghanistan and activities of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant.

He added that NATO's actions and principles must be understood well by Central Asian states, then trust and cooperation can be built.
