University of Tartu professor Ülle Madise has been confirmed as the next chancellor of justice after a vote in Parliament. The 72-9-2 vote means she will succeed the current chancellor, Indrek Teder, in March.

President Toomas Hendrik Ilves proposed Madise in December, saying she had a strong academic background and experience in state offices.

Rait Maruste, head of the Constitutional Committee, said no member of the committee doubted Madise's suitability. Maruste added that Madise was well known to the public and would fight for the legal rights and liberty of every individual.

Madise, 40, is currently head of the Institute of Constitutional and International Law at the University of Tartu. She has previously held a number of high-ranking posts, including the head of the public law division at the Ministry of Justice. Madise has worked for the National Audit Office, Parliament's Constitutional Committee and the National Electoral Committee.

She is also the current legal adviser to the President.

Seven years ago, Madise, then only 33, was also mentioned as a possible candidate for chancellor of justice, when Teder took office.

Teder will step down on March 10, when his seven-year term ends.

The chancellor of justice, also known as the legal ombudsman, is empowered by the Constitution to make sure that laws and regulations are constitutional, and that government offices and officials do not violate the constitutional rights of individuals. The official testifies before and provides expertise to public bodies. The office has a special function as a watchdog for children's rights.
