Rector: Estonia Has Room For More than One University
Newly-elected Tallinn University rector Tiit Land, whose office term starts on May 15, has said that in order to give students more freedom of choice it is necessary to have more than one university in Estonia that teaches the same specialty.
"Estonia is not as small as we think. For a long time I worked in Stockholm, which is almost as big [by population] as our country. Seventy kilometers outside the city there is Uppsala, with as many universities as there are in Estonia" Land said on ETV's talk show Kahe Kõne.
According to Land, the current situation whereby Tallinn University and Tartu University are more universal in their curriculum and Tallinn University of Technology stands out with its specific field of study is suitable.
He added that Estonia won't lose good specialists when graduates find work abroad, so long as measures are taken to get them to return. That, on the other hand, is a separate question whose answer often lies in money, he said.
