Replacement Found for Shut-Down Private University
The Tallinn-based, private Institute of Economics and Management (ECOMEN), whose accreditation was revoked last month, signed an agreement yesterday whereby its 397 students can continue their studies at the Entrepreneurship University of Applied Sciences, known as Mainor in Estonian.
ECOMEN, which was the only private university in the country offering a fully Russian-language curriculum, has announced that it will no longer be operating as of September 1. The majority of its students were studying in Tallinn, while 150 were studying in Ida-Viru County, uudised.err.ee reported.
Mainor rector Krista Tuulik said her university is applying to the Ministry of Education for approval of two Russian-language courses allowing the incoming students to continue their studies. Contracts that the students signed with ECOMEN will be carried over to the new university.
An audit by the ministry in May found that ECOMEN was offering masters degree study without permission and suspected it of falsifying signatures. The university's Czech Republic branch gave off obvious signs of diplomas for sale, the ministry said.
