Tallinn's Liivalaia Gümnaasium has submitted an application to the city government in order change the school's name to Tallinna Südalinna Kool (Tallinn Downtown School).

“Each school has an image. Unfortunately ours is associated with bleakness and odd feelings in the minds of some parents,” the school's director Veiko Rohunurm told Eesti Päevaleht.

The school is a particularly poor performer in the annual 12th grade state exam results, placing around 200th out of 230 schools nationwide for the past three years.

Liivalaia Gümnaasium has been a home to a bi-language Estonian-Russian school, offered distance learning and served as a temporary school when things have gone awry in other schools - all factors that, according to Rohunurm, have lowered its test results and reputation.

He said that the school's potpourri past has left its mark and that changing the name is a part of the slow process of repairing its image.
