Design Contest for Art Academy Building Announced
The architectural competition for designing the building complex that will house the Estonian Art Academy at Kotzebue Street in Tallinn was announced today by the State Real Estate and the academy.
The deadline for the competition is June 30, and winners will be announced by September. The prize fund is 40,000 euros, uudised.err.ee reported. The building is expected to cost between 25 and 30 million euros and open its doors in 2016.
The second stage of the tendering procedure for designing the 11,500 square meter complex will be announced soon after the design contest.
The academy and the State Real Estate (RKAS) signed a co-operation agreement in September, making the latter the owner of the factory building in Kotzebue Street to turn it into a modern architecture, design and art university.
The aim is to bring the academy under one roof in the historical factory building designed by architect Eugen Habermann, although what will remain of the old building has not been decided.
The academy's previous main building was in the city center, across the street from the Viru shopping complex, but legal problems delayed construction at that site and funding was withdrawn.
