Although the final say on the structural overhaul of University of Tartu remains with the university’s senate, the rector and law school have reached a compromise, with the faculty of law preserving its name.

Rector Volli Kalm told uudised.err.ee on Monday the meeting with the staff and students of the faculty of law also touched upon the content of law studies.

The compromise was one of the options floated by the senate, but did not receive enough votes to be included in its proposals: instead of large faculties, the term domain would be introduced, and these would have institutes or faculties and colleges as subunits.

This way, the law school could be part of the Socialia domain in the future, but as a structural unit, it would still be called the Faculty of Law.

A new senate takes office today and will discuss the new statute that oversees the reform of the system of faculties.
