Tallinn University of Technology Turns 95, Presents 67 PhDs

The Tallinn University of Technology is celebrating its 95th anniversary, presenting 67 doctoral diplomas and six honorary doctorates today.

Vice-Rector of Research Errki Truve said in a press release that the number of PhD diplomas represents a new record and it is the institution's goal to keep increasing that figure.

The Faculty of Science gave out the most diplomas, 18, followed by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (13) and the Faculty of Information Technology (10).

The six honorary doctors are Marta Rencz, who heads the Department of Electron Devices at the Technical University of Budapest, Finnish Professors Kalevi Edvard Ekman and Reino Kurki-Suonio, Professor Hans-Werner Schock from Germany, US political science professor Brainard Guy Peters and the President of Caucasus University in Georgia, Dr. Kakha Shengelia.    

The university also unveiled a bust of Uno Mereste, a former lecturer at the university who went on to become the head of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia and an MP.
