The Tallinn University of Technology and Maritime Academy signed a merger agreement on Wednesday and plan to open a vocational school for maritime studies in the coming years.

Education Minister Jevgeni Ossinovski noted that the merger is a step towards a better maritime education and the move helps to distribute resources and specialists more effectively, uudised.err.ee reported.

The academy’s vice rector Roomet Leiger welcomed the merger, saying the plan is to solve long-term problems like low salaries and modernizing infrastructure.

The merger will take effect on August 1 this year. The Maritime Academy will continue to provide education to its students in the curricula of fishing and fish processing technology, refrigerating equipment, ship engines, port and shipping management, navigation officer, shiphandling and maritime safety and navigation.
