An Estonian language proficiency examination was held for the first time abroad, when 17 examinees gathered at the Estonian House in Helsinki on Monday.

“The need to offer Estonian language proficiency exams outside of Estonia has increased in recent years,” said Riina Koolmeister from the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research. “Interest has been highest in Finland, which is why we launched our pilot project there,” she added.

In the future, opportunities to take the examinations will be expanded to other countries, depending on demand and the number of examinees per country. The expansion of examination opportunities abroad will take place in cooperation with Estonian embassies.

People who wish to take the Estonian language proficiency examination abroad are usually those who plan to work or study in Estonia. In addition to foreigners, they include the descendants of Estonians who have obtained their education in another language.

Estonian language proficiency examinations are organized at four levels: A2, B1, B2 and C1. Four skills are examined at each level: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Language proficiency at the B1 level is required in order to apply for citizenship.
