The University of Tartu has been ranked in the 351-400 bracket in the annual world's best universities list, compiled by the Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

On this year's list, which was published today, Tartu scored high marks in the “international outlook” and “citations” categories, 43.7 and 46.2 out of a hundred respectively, but fared worse in the other three categories of “teaching” (20.3), “industry income” (30.3) and “research” (21.2).

The top 200 receive individual rankings, while the rest share the honors in their bracket.

Tartu has held the position for three years in a row.

No Latvian or Lithuanian universities feature on the list, while Finland has five entries, headed by the University of Helsinki on 100th place. Only the Lomonosov Moscow State University, on place 226 to 250, features from Estonia's eastern neighbors.

The California Institute of Technology was named the best university, followed by Harvard and Oxford, both sharing second place.

Tartu and Tallinn's University of Technology made the top 500 list of this year's QS World University Ranking, published three weeks ago. The third major ranking system for higher education facilities, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, names no university from Estonia on its top 500 list.
