Former defense and education minister Aaviksoo running for TUT chancellor
IRL's Vice-Chairman Jaak Aaviksoo has confirmed that he has accepted the offer to run for the office of the Chancellor of Tallinn University of Technology (TUT).
Aaviksoo told ETV that he has been in active politics for a long time and although it continues to present him with challenges, he is giving TUT's offer his full consideration.
"The University Board of Trustees made me the offer and as I hold these people and the university itself in high regard, I've decided to accept. One of the reasons of course is that it presents me with a complete and a rather serious challenge. If the Board of Trustees so decides, I am ready and willing to do this job," Aaviksoo said.
Aaviksoo is the former rector of Tartu University. He was Estonia's defense minister from 2007-2011, and minister of education and research from 2011-2014. He received 1,405 votes at the last nation election on March 1 this year, and was elected to Parliament.
The new chancellor will be elected on May 22.
