Residents in central and southern Estonia reported white stuff falling on this raw Tuesday, and the icon on the official weather site showed flakes, but the weather service says it wasn't snow.

Linking to one of the stories, the National Weather Service said on its Facebook page: "We refute this claim! No snow fell today in Jõgeva and there is no reason to get one's hopes up for a ski marathon. The misleading information on the weather service map could have been due to some other form of precipitation that the sensor erroneously registered as snow."

But eyewitness reports clashed. On social media, Jõgeva appeared to be the epicenter of the phenomenon, with residents reporting a wintry mix coming down at 8 C.

It was far colder elsewhere. Temperatures at the official measuring station in Võru plummeted to 3.8 C around noon after a high of 10 C in the morning. In rural Võru County, residents reported hail followed by a drop in temperatures and then, a sleet-like precipitation distinct from the hailstones earlier. Later media outlets posted pictures and descriptions of white ground and a 30-minute-long slushy snow event in north central Estonia.

Weather conditions have been changeable to say the least this year, with two heat waves with temperatures breaking 30 C in April and May, including a mini-drought, snowfall in Tallinn in early May, followed by more extremes of temperature.
