For those wondering if and when more typical seasonal conditions would ever arrive this winter, there is finally an answer: forecasts are calling for sub-freezing temperatures and light snow to hit at the end of the week.

Until then, however, the dampness and unseasonable warmth that Estonia has been experiencing in recent weeks is set to continue, according to the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute.

Sleet and rain are expected to arrive in the early hours of Tuesday morning as a wet weather system moving across the Baltic makes its presence felt. Chances of precipitation should increase during the day, which translates to rain in most areas and sleet in eastern regions of the country. Temperatures during the day should range from 0 to +5 C.

Wednesday is slated to be even warmer, +2 to +6 C, with the occasional shower falling, while on Thursday the mercury should once again hover between 0 and +5 C and conditions should stay damp.

The big change is expected to hit early on Friday as an active, low-pressure system that will have been sweeping across the Danish Straits and the southern tip of Sweden makes landfall in southeast Estonia. Precipitation, in the form of both rain and sleet, should spread throughout the country by morning and is expected to be intense. Temperatures should start off being the same 0 to +5 seen on Thursday, but during the afternoon they are likely to drop very rapidly, crossing below zero by evening.

The fast changeover between wet and freezing weather is the perfect setup for slippery road conditions, so drivers are advised to use caution.

Some snow is expected overnight between Friday and Saturday, when temperatures should mainly range from -6 to -1 C, but could get down to as low as -10 C in eastern areas. The remainder of the weekend should stay cold, with no above-freezing temperatures in sight through Monday.
