Two Estonian companies were among the 16 finalists for the European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE), selected from the 152 submissions.

EU Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella announced the winners on Sunday evening. The awards recognize environmentally friendly practices in five categories: management, product and services, process innovation, business and biodiversity and international business cooperation.

Estonian clothing company WerroWool was nominated for the management award, and clothing company AusDesign was nominated for the international business cooperation award. Both were the winners of the 2014 national competition.

WerroWool manufactures cellulose fiber wool, an eco-friendly heat insulation material, using local paper waste of Estonia. Cellulose fiber wool production requires 30 times less energy than that of rock or class wool.

Ausdesign is dealing with upcycling, the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or for better environmental value. It produces new design garments from textile waste from Bangladesh. The production of each such garment uses 91 percent less water and 86 percent less energy than one made of fresh fabric. The amount of production waste is cut in half.

The submissions deadline for the next national competition, organized by the Ministry of the Environment, is January 7.
