Icebreaking Season Ends for Gulf of Riga
April 4 marks the last day for this season's icebreaking operations on Pärnu Bay and the Gulf of Riga, the Maritime Administration has announced.
During the winter navigation period, which began in the area on January 31, the administration came to the assistance of 71 ships visiting the Port of Pärnu, using its EVA-316 icebreaker and chartered tug Castor to keep the traffic flowing.
As late as March 27 there were reports of drift ice up to 40 centimeters thick that had been hampering ship traffic in the vicinity of Pärnu.
Icebreaking operations are still ongoing in the Gulf of Finland near the Port of Sillamäe, the administration said.
